Launching a survey

A survey launches the same way as every other study, across three tabs after Build: Audience (how many responses, and what the panel will be asked for), Pre-launch (a last check, nothing spent) and Launch (buy responses from our panel, or go live on your own link). Once a survey is live, its design is locked, so every response answers the same survey.

Audience

Set How many responses? (between 1 and 10,000) and click Save.

You don't choose who takes part on this tab: that comes from your survey's screener (see survey logic and the screener). Instead, What the survey asks the panel for reports it in plain English:

  • The panel only sends people who…: each targeted demographic and its answers, with the question it came from.
  • Quotas the panel fills: each group's share and how many responses that works out to.
  • Screened inside the survey: screens the panel can't target, with the reason. People are sent and then turned away, which lowers incidence and raises the price per response.

To change any of it, change the survey in the builder. Check panel reach asks the panel how many people fit, for a survey of about the length it expects.

Pre-launch

A go/no-go list before anything goes live. Nothing is placed or spent here. It checks that your survey has a title, has at least one question, and that the map checks find no problems. When you're buying responses, it also checks that the panel can target your screener, that you've said how many responses you want, and that we can reach and price your audience, and it shows how many people match, the price per response and the estimated total.

Launch

Two ways to go live. A survey uses one or the other, never both, and one live on its own link can't take a panel order.

Buy responses works exactly as on other study types (see sharing and launching):

  1. Place order sets the order up. Nothing is spent or recruited yet, but placing the order locks the survey's design.
  2. Pay (the button shows the amount, for example Pay $500.00 to continue) at a secure Stripe checkout. Paying is what starts recruiting: the order goes live by itself within moments, and the survey's link opens for the people the panel sends. If it doesn't start, a Go live button does it.
  3. Pause, Resume and Close order run it from then on. An order pauses itself once it is full, and closing is final.

A very large or specialized audience may show Request a quote instead of a price.

Your own link is free. Click Go live, then Go live, and lock the design, and share the link with anyone you like: your customers, your team, a mailing list. Copy it, or open it to check. Go live stays off until the Pre-launch checks pass ("Complete the Pre-launch checks first"). Then:

  • Pause stops the link taking anyone, including people part way through, until you Resume.
  • Close ends it for good; it can't be reopened.
  • The survey closes by itself once it reaches your number of responses. Responses rejected on quality don't count toward it. On the Free plan, an own-link survey takes up to 10 completed responses.

Once a survey has a panel order, the Your own link panel just points you to the order: the survey opens, pauses and closes with it.

What you can change once it's live

Nothing in the design: the questions, the routing and the number of responses are locked from going live (or, for a panel order, from placing it). To change a live or closed survey, use Make a copy on the Launch tab, or Duplicate at the top of the survey's page. The copy is a new draft with the same design and number of responses, but none of the responses or the order.

What respondents see

The survey link (…/q/…) works on phones and computers. Respondents get a progress bar, Next, Back, and Skip on questions that aren't required.

  • Coming back. Someone who leaves and returns on the same browser picks up where they stopped. Someone the panel sent can also pick up in another browser or app.
  • Screened out or quota full: "Thank you for your time. That's all the questions we have for you today."
  • Completed: "Thank you, you're done. Your answers have been recorded."
  • Panel respondents are sent back to the panel when they finish or are screened out.
  • Taking part twice. Someone who has completed a live survey on a browser is told they've already taken part.
  • A paused or closed link says the survey is closed and no longer accepting responses.

To ask permission to contact people again, add a Consent and recontact question and set it to Permission to contact again. You must say what the permission covers, and a Yes is recorded with what it covers.
