Comparison

MaxDiff software compared

Four tools that run MaxDiff (Best–Worst scaling), side by side on price, scoring, data quality and what else they do. Sawtooth Software and Conjointly are the specialists for conjoint and pricing research; QuestionPro is a broad survey platform; SortedResearch pairs MaxDiff with card sorting. We make SortedResearch, so every claim about the others links to their own pages.

The MaxDiff itself

All four estimate item scores from best and worst choices. The specialists go further on modelling; SortedResearch focuses on a clear answer.

Who checks the data?

This is where the four differ most. SortedResearch judges every response automatically; the others give you tools to judge it yourself.

SortedResearchSawtooth Software (Discover)ConjointlyQuestionPro
Automatic checks✓On by default for every response, including participants you recruit yourself: speeding, tapping the same position, and more~A fit score (RLH) per respondent; removing people is manual3✓Speeders, bots and AI-checked open ends; a quality score flags the rest for review6~Speed traps, patterns and bots, switched on per survey, mostly flagging; on Team and Research editions10
Bad panel responses replaced free✓Yes, automatically, and refunded–Not found~On predefined panels6–Not found; panel sales are final9

“Not found” means we could not find it on that vendor’s website or help pages on 20 October 2026, not that it cannot exist.

What else each one can run

If your MaxDiff list comes from a card sort, or ends up as a menu, the other methods matter.

Which one fits

  • Sawtooth Software or Conjointly if MaxDiff is a step towards conjoint, pricing or market simulation, or you need advanced modelling and very long lists.
  • QuestionPro if MaxDiff is one question type inside a wider survey programme run on a single platform.
  • SortedResearch if the list comes from customers (a card sort) and you want it ranked by people whose responses have been checked for you, at a published monthly price.

Common questions

How much does MaxDiff software cost?
On the public pricing pages we read on 20 October 2026: SortedResearch is $49 a month, billed monthly, the only one of the four with a published monthly price. Conjointly Professional is $2,895 a year. Sawtooth Software and QuestionPro do not publish prices for their MaxDiff plans. Sawtooth and Conjointly both have free plans that cap MaxDiff responses.
Which MaxDiff tool also does card sorting?
SortedResearch runs open, closed and hybrid card sorts and turns a finished sort into a MaxDiff study in one click. QuestionPro offers open and closed card sorting on its Research Edition, and Conjointly added closed card sorting in 2026. We found no card sorting on Sawtooth Software’s pages.
Is Best–Worst scaling the same as MaxDiff?
Yes. They are two names for the same method: people see a few items at a time and pick the most and least important, and the choices add up to a ranking of the whole list.
Do I need Hierarchical Bayes for MaxDiff?
For ranking a list and finding the must-haves, no. Hierarchical Bayes estimates a score for each person, which matters most when you feed MaxDiff into simulations or segmentation. Sawtooth Software and Conjointly use it; if your next step is a market simulator, use one of them.
